The kitchen table in 73-year-old Deweese Wolfe’s house in Big Cove. Deweese and his wife Elsie Louise Wolfe raised three children and two grandchildren, including granddaughter Bekka, in this house. Now Deweese lives on his own. The items on the table sit within an arm’s length of his favorite chair. I shared a homemade apple crumble here with Deweese, Bekka, and family friend Sarah Burkey. Deweese told us bits of Wolfe family history, Sarah talked about the tree that gave the apples for the crumble, and because Bekka said she is thinking of becoming a nurse, we spoke of the importance of kind nurses.
