Charlie Rhodarmer, manager and director of the Sequoyah Birthplace Museum in Vonore, Tennessee, holds one of the original 1833 prints made from a painted portrait of Sequoyah that was later destroyed while in the possession of the Smithsonian. Sequoyah created the Cherokee writing system. In this version of the print, Sequoyah’s ears are stretched, indicating his status as a warrior.
