Congo In Between
When I first traveled to Democratic Republic of Congo in 2012 I was interested in finding the quieter moments in a country wracked by decades of civil war. The fighting in Democratic Republic of Congo has resulted in millions of war-related deaths and traumas. Yet no nation should be solely defined by its conflict.
Congo in Between is a series that offers a glimpse into the rhythm of everyday life behind a country often interpreted in the language of conflict and victimization. A dance in the dark, a bookshelf sagging from the volumes in supports, a typewriter battling time. These enduring moments are in between –– touched, but not overtaken by the history they witness.
There is an unstoppable cadence to life in Democratic Republic of Congo. Kinshasa and Bas Congo, the regions where many of these images were made, are some of the most vibrant and textured places I know.
