Shantoya Bruguier is the shift leader at the Cheyenne River Bridge checkpoint on Highway 63, located on the southern border of the Cheyenne River Reservation. Bruguier has been a member of the Cheyenne River Covid security team since April. “We can do this for our people, so this is what we’re gonna do,” says Bruguier of the checkpoints. “We gotta do what we gotta do to protect our people.” Against the tribe’s rights as a sovereign Lakota nation, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem ordered the tribe to remove the barriers, a demand it has rejected.
