I'm so proud of and happy for @cordlejenny, who I had the pleasure of teaching @cdsduke. Jenny is sharing a beautiful and important story about her sister, Christy, on @opensocietyfoundations this week. Take a look. ・・・
“Sometimes I feel like a child because of the way I am treated.” —Christy Cordle
Hello, this is Jenny Cordle sharing images from a long term personal project about my sister, Christy, 43, who was officially diagnosed with encephalopathy, or brain disease, at age 24. Christy's condition is unique, complex, and involves seizures and psychotic episodes, including hallucinations, delusions and paranoia. The disease has stunted her mental growth since birth. “One Side of Me Daydreams” is about how encephalopathy shapes Christy’s narrative: forcing a dependency on medication to suppress the urge to bring forth an imagined self, and learning to accept an unpredictable thought process. The project also highlights the need for constant vigilance in regard to securing rights to appropriate education and employment opportunities for disabled persons within the United States.
