"In this place, you can't ask 'why?'" says 26-year-old Debby Lottering of her home town, Manenberg. A suburb of Cape Town, South Africa, Manenberg was established in the Cape Flats, a vast low-lying sand dune, during the late 1960s by the apartheid government as an area for Coloured families. Long known as one of South Africa's most violent places, faith and fortitude help the people of Manenberg look to the future.
This is @sarah_stacke sharing images from "Love From Manenberg," a long-term personal project I began in 2011. "Love From Manenberg" is not about gangs, poverty, or substance abuse, even though all of those things exist here. "Love From Manenberg" is about relationships and the understanding that nobody is perfect -- or any one thing -- all the time, it is what is in the heart that binds us.
